The method of universal invitation is indeed for superiors and subordinates to equalize their labor. Wherever the assembly resides, if there are tasks that must rely on the assembly's collective strength to accomplish, the monastery storehouse first reports to the abbot, and then instructs a postulant to convey the message to the head seat and the karmadāna. They instruct the Sangha hall postulant to announce to the assembly and hang the universal invitation board, additionally using a small slip of paper written and pasted on the board saying: "(At such a time, in such a place)." When hearing either the wooden fish or the sound of the drum, each person holds their sleeve-binding cord, drapes it over the left arm, and hurries to the place of the universal invitation to apply their strength. Except for those guarding the dormitories, on duty in the hall, or the aged and sick, all should attend together. One should reflect upon the ancient's admonition: "A day without work is a day without food."
