Whenever wishing to request instruction, first report to the attendant, who conveys it to the abbot: 'Elder So-and-so wishes to go to the abbot's quarters this evening to request instruction.' If the request is granted, go to the attendant's office after the settling bell. Wait until candles are lit and incense is set in the abbot's quarters; the attendant leads him in to greet with folded hands before the abbot and insert incense. He spreads [the mat] fully and makes nine prostrations, gathers the niṣīdana, advances, and says: 'Because the matter of birth and death is great and impermanence is swift, I humbly hope the upādhyāya, out of compassion and skillful means, will bestow instruction.' Standing respectfully aside, he listens attentively to the bestowed instruction. When finished, he advances, inserts incense, spreads [the mat] fully, and makes nine prostrations; this is called 'thanking for the conditions.' If excused, he makes prostrations touching the mat. Next, he goes to the attendant's office to express thanks.
