8.20

齋粥一時。僧堂內開鉢。念佛唱食遍食。施財白眾皆鳴之。維那主之。下堂時聖僧侍者鳴之。知事告退時。請知事時亦鳴之。住持入院開堂將說法時。諸山上首鳴之。謂之白椎也。

At the congee and midday meals, when opening the bowls in the Sangha hall, chanting the Buddha's name, announcing the food, distributing the food, distributing donations, and announcing to the assembly, it is struck. The karmadāna oversees it. When descending from the hall, the sacred monk's attendant strikes it. When the administrators ask to step down, and when administrators are invited, it is also struck. When an abbot enters the monastery, opens the hall, and is about to preach the Dharma, the leader from among the other monasteries strikes it; this is called 'striking the mallet.'
