The master was a son of the Wang family of Changle in Fuzhou. In his youth he left the dust of the world, thoroughly mastering the three trainings. When Mazu propagated the transformation in Jiangxi, his dharma seats were magnificent; while Dazhu, Nanquan, and Guizong were hailed as the dragons and elephants of the Dharma, the master was their foremost. When the Patriarch entered tranquility at Letan, the master succeeded him. Because the crowd gathered so densely that there was no room, he wished to take his leave and departed. Passing through Xinxin, he rested beneath Chelun Peak. There, Gan Zhen and You Chang wished to donate land and invite him to reside. Soon the assembly arrived again, and so he constructed a monastery as a great saṅghārāma. On the seventeenth day of the first month in the ninth year of the Yuanhe era, the master returned to tranquility. The fragrant trees blazed without being ignited; the numinous creek dried up just as spring arrived. The fourfold assembly grieved bitterly, and buried him at Daxiong Peak. Previously, there had been an extraordinary man named Ascetic Sima, who had selected the burial site, saying: "Flanked by three connected peaks, its wondrous qualities are inexhaustible. If the King of the Dharma resides here, he will be an exemplar for the world." Contemporaries regarded this as truly verified. In the first year of the Changqing era of the Tang, an imperial decree conferred the posthumous title Chan Master Dazhi, and his stūpa was named Great Jewel Victorious Wheel.
