The funeral office karmadāna and the junior disciples carry incense to the guest quarters to invite the chief mourner. For the small convocation before the spirit on the great night, the seat is prepared in advance. Awaiting the dusk bell, the drums are beaten to assemble the assembly. The two ranks greet him with folded hands below the seat (as in the standard ritual). The chief mourner uses an accompanying attendant to burn incense; if there is none, the sacred monk attendant substitutes. Following the small convocation, he steps down from the seat. The junior disciples line up and bow in gratitude. The head seat leads the assembly, offers incense before the casket, and stands in place. When the rite of offering tea and hot decoction is concluded, the monastery karmadāna recites, "I announce to the great assembly: The hall head upādhyāya has entered parinirvāṇa. This day is already past, and life too is diminished accordingly; like fish with little water, what joy is there in this? All of you should strive with diligence, as if saving your heads from burning. Mind only impermanence, and be careful not to be heedless. With reverence, let the great assembly proceed solemnly to the casket screen and recite the vast names of the myriad virtues, in order to elevate his rank. We rely upon the great assembly to recite: Pure Dharmakāya Vairocana Buddha... and so forth." When the Great Compassion Dhāraṇī is completed, the dedication is made: "The merit of the above chanting and sutra recitation is dedicated to the newly deceased hall head upādhyāya. We humbly pray that, not forgetting your vow power, you will re-manifest the udumbara blossom, row the boat of compassion on the flowing waves of birth and death, and welcome the deluded to the other shore of bodhi. Again we trouble the great assembly to recite: All Buddhas of the ten directions and the three times... and so forth." When this is concluded, the monastery guest master recites the Śūraṅgama Mantra: "The merit of the above sutra recitation is dedicated to the newly deceased hall head upādhyāya, to elevate his rank on the occasion of the great night: All Buddhas of the ten directions and the three times... and so forth." Next, each sacrificial offering is presented one by one, and at the end, the Great Compassion Dhāraṇī is recited (the dedication is as before). When the servants have made prostrations and the sutra recitation is concluded, the postulant of the funeral office calls out, "We invite the head seat and the great assembly to take their seats for hot decoction and fruit." The assembly disperses. The junior disciples and the abbot's servants guard the spirit throughout the night.
