All Buddhas of the three times attained the Way only through leaving household life. The ancestral masters of successive generations who transmitted the Buddha mind-seal were all śramaṇas. It is precisely because of strictly purifying the vinaya that one is able to serve as a grand model for the three realms. Thus, in practicing Chan and inquiring into the Way, the vinaya rules come first. If one does not leave behind faults and guard against wrongdoing, how can one become a Buddha or act as an ancestor? As for the method of receiving the precepts, one should prepare the three robes, bowl, and utensils, as well as newly cleaned clothing and articles. If there are no new ones, wash and dye [old ones] to make them pure. Upon entering the platform to receive the precepts, be focused with one mind, being strictly careful not to let conditions wander. Embody the Buddha's deportment, be complete with the Buddha's vinaya rules, and attain the Buddha's enjoyment—this is no minor matter; how could one take it lightly? If one borrows robes and bowls, even if one ascends the platform to receive the precepts, one does not obtain the precepts at all, just as if one had never received them. Throughout one's life one will be a person without precepts, falsely occupying a place in the gate of emptiness and consuming the alms of the faithful in vain. Having received the śrāvaka precepts, one should receive the bodhisattva precepts. This is the gradual entry into the Dharma.
