The Zenghui ji says: “The Buddha instituted the distribution of clothing with the intention of letting those who remain see the deceased's belongings distributed among the Sangha and reflect: ‘Since he has ended like this, I too shall be like this.’ It was established as an antidote to put an end to greed and craving. Nowadays people do not examine themselves, but instead wrangle over prices and clamour noisily at the time of the clothing auction; how deeply foolish!”
