The above sixteen works, totaling forty-six fascicles: from the late years of Emperor Wu until the Chengsheng era, Paramārtha (in the language of Liang: Zhendi), Tripiṭaka Master from the country of Ujjayinī in Western India, heard from afar that the Xiao ruler was practicing the bodhisattva path and seeking out famous masters to serve as models for sages and worthies. Harboring treasures from his native land, he came to this territory. The Sanskrit palm-leaf texts of sūtras and treatises he brought totaled 240 bundles; had they been completely translated, they would have yielded more than twenty thousand fascicles, most of which had never before been transmitted to China. Encountering the collapse and division of the late Liang, he was unable to fully proclaim and express them; what he produced as conditions permitted is briefly recorded above. Those translated later are further set forth and prefaced in the Chen Dynasty records. These matters are mostly found in Cao Pi's biography of the Tripiṭaka master. (Zhangfang remarks: Sengyou said, 'The Way is propagated by persons, and the Dharma awaits conditions to be revealed.' How true! Formerly, there were persons and the Dharma, but lacking conditions, they did not meet the right time; today, encountering a fine time and auspicious conditions, we lack persons and lack the Dharma. The living beings are indeed pitiful; this is truly lamentable!).
