The above eight fascicles were compiled by the śramaṇa Shi Huishan of Qixuan Monastery in Yangzhou. Shan was skilled in the study of the Abhidharma by means of the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa*, regularly citing the Small Vehicle to substantiate and establish meanings. Shan therefore sequentially and broadly explicated [the text] according to the phrasing, just as the stars and the moon assist in brightening the sun, or like an abundance of diverse flowers scattering and falling; hence it was named the *Sanhua lun* (Discourse on Scattering Flowers). (The preface to the discourse briefly states: "However, the essence of literary composition values conciseness in words and richness in principle. I understand this quite well. The reason I now detail matters minutely is precisely because this work is so rarely mastered by people. Therefore, with diligent analysis of doctrines, my explanation makes things clear at every turn in the text. I trust superior gentlemen of discerning study will inspect my humble intention.") Towards the end of the Taiqing era, Shan went up to Jiangling; at the end of the Chengsheng era, he entered the Pass and resided at Chonghua Monastery in the old city of Chang'an. The Prime Minister of Zhou made special offerings to him, and he expounded the *Dharmottara-śāstra* (*Fasheng*). He reached an age of over sixty years at the end of his life.
