The above five works, totaling one hundred and seventeen fascicles. During the reigns of Emperor Xiaowu and Emperor An, the Tripiṭaka master Gautama Saṅghadeva of the country of Jibin—in the language of Jin, Zhongtian—crossed the Yangtze during the Yao era of the Later Qin. Prior to this, Huiyuan of Mount Lu had been ardently seeking wondrous scriptures; hearing that Saṅghadeva had arrived, he invited him to Mount Lu to translate them together, pruning away embellishments and preserving the substance; what is transmitted today is indeed that text. In the spring of the final year of the Long'an era, he traveled to Jiankang; none of the princes, dukes, and eminent men of letters of the Jin dynasty failed to visit his seat. By winter, for the General of the Palace Guard and Marquis of Dongting, Wang Xun, he retranslated the Madhyama and Ekottarika Āgamas, among others, assembling forty śramaṇas including the eminent master of the capital Shi Huichi to collaboratively translate them in detail; it was completed by the following summer. The scriptures and treatises he produced earlier and later along the Yangtze and Luo rivers exceeded one million words, all exquisitely capturing the profound import.
