The above treatise in one fascicle was composed during the reign of Emperor Yuan by the śramaṇa Zhu Sengfu of Waguan Monastery in Yangdu. At that time, followers of divergent teachings all claimed that the mind-spirit has a form, only more subtle than myriad things. Following their eloquence, they suppressed one another; right and wrong could not be distinguished, and there was no standard for accepting or rejecting. For this reason, Sengfu composed this treatise. The treatise roughly said: 'Whatever has form has measure; whatever has measure has an end. Since the spirit is endless, we know it has no form.' The debaters of the time, though in chaotic dispute, upon seeing that this principle reached the truth, comfortably believed and submitted to it.
