8.33

右五部合一百一十四卷。晉孝武帝世。兜佉勒國三藏法師曇摩難提。秦言法喜。以建元初至長安。誦四阿含梵本口授。竺佛念寫為梵文。到二十年為符主譯。作五十九卷。時屬慕容沖及姚萇反亂。關內危阻未過委悉。難提西出不知所之。弘法也多難。遇緣也勤就。可重可悲。

The above five works in 114 fascicles: During the reign of Emperor Xiaowu of the Jin, Tripiṭaka Dharma Master Dharmanandin of the Tokhāra kingdom—translated into Qin as Faxi—arrived in Chang'an at the beginning of the Jianyuan era. He recited from memory the Sanskrit text of the four Āgamas and dictated it orally; Zhu Fonian wrote it down in Indic script. By the twentieth year, it was translated for the ruler Fu [Jian], making fifty-nine fascicles. At that time, when Murong Chong and Yao Chang rebelled, the area within the passes became dangerous and obstructed, and [the translations] could not be thoroughly polished. Dharmanandin departed for the west, and where he went is unknown. Great are the hardships in propagating the Dharma, and diligent was the exertion upon encountering the conditions—truly worthy of respect and lamentation!
