The above two fascicles. Composed in the reign of Emperor Xiaowu by the śramaṇa Shi Tanwei of Shangming Temple in Jingzhou. Wei was originally a disciple of Shi Dao'an. He continually propagated his master's teaching, lecturing to benefit beings. Whenever he turned the wheel of the Dharma once, both monastics and laity rushed to attend. Constantly reflecting on where his understanding came from, he had an image of Dao'an painted, which he recollected and worshipped. Thereupon, the men and women of Jiangling all faced west and paid homage to the 'Seal-Hand Bodhisattva'. Someone asked: 'How does the Dharma Master's spiritual teaching compare to that of the Upādhyāya?' Wei said: 'The depth of the Upādhyāya's internal practice is not easily measured, and his external engagement manifests numerous divine signs. As for my single drop, how could it compare to the rivers and seas?'
