The two fascicles above. During the reign of Emperor An of the Jin, Mengxun's younger cousin Jingsheng, Marquis of Anyang, was a broadly learned man well-versed in the classics and histories. Because of Dharmakṣema's propagation of the sūtras, he turned his mind to the internal scriptures, observed the five precepts, and restrained the six senses. Upon reading the sūtras translated by Dharmakṣema, he was able to chant them from memory. Traveling west to Khotan, he consulted the Indian Tripiṭaka Dhyāna Master Buddhasena—translated into Liang as Fojiang—inquiring into the meaning of the Way. Buddhasena possessed natural brilliance and recited half a myriad verses of sūtras, thoroughly understanding the methods of meditation; thus the various kingdoms of the Western Regions called him a lion among men. Anyang studied under Sena, receiving the meditation sūtras, various secret and essential techniques, and curative practices. Reciting the Sanskrit texts fluently by heart, he returned east, and translated and transmitted them in the Liang territory to teach and instruct others; hence they circulated.
