The Commentary states: The Loutan jing speaks of the one hundred wheel-turning kings of the Ikṣvāku line. Both the Āgama and the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya say that the last king was named Mahāsammata. Calling him the 'last' refers to the hundredth. Nanshan points to Mahāsammata as the seventh-generation ancestor; following the Dīrgha Āgama, from the six kings such as Utpala down to the Prince, making one hundred and seven generations, this is acceptable. Yet when it also states that he was 'one hundred generations removed from the Bodhisattva', the character 'seven' must have dropped out. From the Democratic King to Susaṃkalpa, there were thirty-three generations in direct succession. Down from the ten clans of Payamka, whether direct heirs and concubine-born heirs were alternately enthroned, or brothers successively arose, dividing into ten categories, there must have been distinctions of closeness and distance, beginning and end. Yet having received the bright mandate of Heaven, ruling as kings over the four continents, the way by which they attained sovereign virtue was in no case different. In total, the ten clans had 84,211 kings; together with the thirty-three kings starting from the Democratic King, and the six ancestral kings down to the person of the Prince, there were altogether 84,250 kings.
