列諸師之名。考其例有八。或從國號。如北齊高麗。或從山名。如南岳天台。或從師號。如智者法智。或從生地。如章安仙城。或從寺名。如法華天宮。或從自號。如草堂息菴。或從郡名。如錢唐四明。或從著書之名。如扶宗憲章。近世多以自號行。雖稱名之不一。而所以名乎其人。則各得其實也。

In listing the names of the various masters, an examination reveals eight criteria: some are derived from dynastic designations, such as Beiqi or Gaoli; some from mountain names, such as Nanyue or Tiantai; some from master titles, such as Zhizhe or Fazhi; some from birthplaces, such as Zhang'an or Xiancheng; some from temple names, such as Fahua or Tiangong; some from self-chosen sobriquets, such as Caotang or Xi'an; some from commandery names, such as Qiantang or Siming; some from the titles of their writings, such as Fuzong or Xianzhang. In recent times, many have been known by their self-chosen sobriquets. Although the styles of naming are not uniform, as for naming the actual person, each captures their reality.
