1.77

學無學品云。佛言。我與阿難。等於空王佛所。同時發菩提心。阿難常樂多聞。我常勤精進。是故我已得成阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。而阿難護持我法（文句。昔與我同發大心。即是同學。由我精進。前超得佛。由彼多聞。猶故持經）。

The chapter 'Trainees and Adepts' says: 'The Buddha said: "Ānanda and I together in the presence of King of Empty Space Buddha simultaneously gave rise to the aspiration for bodhi. Ānanda constantly delighted in extensive learning, while I was constantly diligent and energetic. Therefore, I have already attained anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhi, whereas Ānanda protects and upholds my Dharma."' (The Wenju says: 'In the past having given rise to the great aspiration together with me, he was my fellow student. Because of my diligence, I surpassed him in advance and attained Buddhahood; because of his extensive learning, he still upholds the sūtra.')
