At that time, Queen Bhadrā, wishing to establish Dīrghāyus, requested the king to banish the four sons from the country. Reaching the north of the Snow Mountains (Himālaya), they established a city and dwelt there, and in not many years it flourished into a powerful state. (The *Benxing jing* says they went to the sacred mountains to found a state; the city was named Kapilavastu, and its king was named Biecheng, revered and obeyed near and far.) Their royal father, regretting and longing for them, sent an envoy to summon them, but the four sons declined on account of their fault and did not return. The royal father sighed three times in praise of them, saying: "My sons are Śākyas (translated here as 'able and benevolent'; *Benxing jing*)." Because they arrived at the edge of the Snow Mountains and dwelt in a grove of straight trees (śāka), they were named Śākya (translated here as 'straight grove'; *Dīrgha-āgama*). Because they built a city and constructed residences near the Sākiya grove north of the Snow Mountains, it was named the Sākiya State (*Pañcavargika-vinaya*).
