Dhyāna Master Hongjing was from the Wen clan of Fuyang. In the twenty-second year of Zhenguan, he was ordained by imperial order at Yuquan [Monastery]. Relying on Zhang'an, he received the teachings on Cessation and Contemplation (śamatha-vipaśyanā). He constantly chanted the Lotus Sūtra and was favored with Samantabhadra manifesting his form to bear witness, while divine boys waited upon him on both sides. Later, ten li south of the monastery, he separately established a hermitage called Longxing. In the first year of the Zhengsheng era of the Heavenly Empress, an imperial decree summoned him to translate the Avataṃsaka Sūtra together with Śikṣānanda and others. From the Heavenly Empress through Emperor Zhongzong, he received imperial summonses three times in all, entering the palace to receive offerings and serve as ordination master. Later he begged to return to the mountains. The Emperor decreed that at Linguang Palace, together with twenty eminent monks from throughout the realm, blessings be cultivated and a vegetarian feast held. The Emperor personally composed a poem, ordering Secretariat Director Li Qiao and others to compose matching verses as parting gifts. The Master received the poems, bowed deeply with hands clasped, shook his khakkhara, and departed. The whole empire held him in honor.
