10.28

禪師大慧。唐太宗賜號而忘其名。初聞章安說止觀即得妙悟。隱居南岳專事修禪。鳥獸馴於坐隅。人服慈化。

Chan Master Dahui was granted this title by Emperor Taizong of Tang, but his personal name has been forgotten. When he first heard Zhāng'ān explain the calming and contemplation, he immediately attained profound awakening. He lived in seclusion at Nanyue, devoting himself solely to cultivating Chan. Birds and beasts grew tame at the corner of his seat, and people were won over by his compassionate transformation.
