10.34

論曰。左溪本紀。稱為真覺為同門友。真覺傳中。稱左溪激厲遂謁曹溪。而又言精於天台止觀之道。是知同學於天宮無可疑者。況永嘉集中全用止觀遮照之旨。至此當益信。是宜繫之天宮用見師授之意。但世傳證道歌。辭旨乖戾。昔人謂非真作。豈不然乎。

The appraisal says: The basic annals of Zuoxi state that Zhenjue was a fellow student and friend. In the biography of Zhenjue, it states that Zuoxi urged him to visit Caoxi, and it also says that he was master of the Tiantai path of calming and contemplation. From this, we know beyond doubt that they studied together under Tiangong. Furthermore, the Yongjia Collection exclusively employs the principle of calming and contemplation through concealment and illumination; this should make it even more credible. Thus, it is appropriate to attach his entry to Tiangong, thereby demonstrating the meaning of master and disciple transmission. However, the Song of Realizing the Way transmitted in the world is perverse in expression and purport; earlier generations considered it not to be his genuine work. Could this not be true?
