Chan Master Yuanhao, courtesy name Guangcheng, was of the Qin family of Wumen. Initially, at Longxing Temple, he received the teaching of the Lotus and the Calm-and-Insight from Jingxi. He secluded himself in the mountain forests, dwelling his mind in samādhi. Later, he resided at Kaiyuan Temple. The two gentlemen Liang and Tian encouraged him to compose writings, and he consequently annotated the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra], recording his own realizations in the preface. At the time he composed the commentary, he moved extraordinary flowers to grow on the courtyard steps, which no one in the world could recognize, and spiritual birds of five colors flew back and forth. In the mid-winter of the twelfth year of the Yuanhe era, he manifested quiescent passing, and a stūpa was erected on the southern plain of Huqiu. Among the master's classmates, more than a hundred were well known; those not counted among the monks included the Hanlin academician Liang Su, the remonstrance official Tian Dun, and the attendant officer Cui Gong—these three men. Among his disciples who inherited his teachings and became famous in their time were Zhi Jing, Zhongyi, Ziyu, Daoru, Zhongliang, and their peers.
