Dharma Master Xianrun, styled Juyuan, was from the Zheng family of Shangyu in Yue. At seven, he served Ziming of Dengci. Progressing to receive the full precepts, he investigated the vinaya with precision. Subsequently entering Tiantai, he had an awakening upon reading Zhiyi's writings on the Threefold Contemplation. He then went to Kaihua in Qiantang to study under Master Zhao. He attained wide penetration into the tenets of the *Lotus*, the *Vimalakīrti*, the *Nirvāṇa*, and the *Śūraṅgama*. Master Zhao respected his precocious accomplishment and had him share the lecture seat. When Master Zhao went to Fantian, he again appointed him to act as his proxy. In the fourth year of the Jingde era [1007 CE], the magistrate of Shangyu, Pei Huan, together with the clergy and laity of the local district, welcomed him back to Dengci to expound the Great Teaching. In the beginning of the Tianxi era, he moved to lecture at Longjiao in the prefecture. He composed the *Resolving Doubts on the Sub-commentary*, interpreting the threefold vanquishing entirely according to the Perfect Teaching, which was refuted by Jingjue. When Master Zhao manifested entering quiescence, he again bestowed upon him the incense burner and fly-whisk, and Xianrun succeeded him to reside at Fantian, lecturing every single day without fail. In the third year of the Tiansheng era [1025 CE], he moved to dwell at Yongfu in Kuaiji, gathering five hundred disciples; every day he dispatched the assembly to practice begging to provide for the two daily meals. He once made an image of Samantabhadra and led the assembly in practicing the Way, whereupon the Great Being emitted light as verification. People of the time revered him, calling him the Repentance Master, deeming him second only to Ciyun. A disciple recounted his virtues, saying: "The Master sat upon the lion's seat and waved the chowrie for nearly three cycles of twelve years; he gave a hundred lecture series across five monasteries, his achievements fulfilled and his reputation established, without shame before the ancients." They then requested Li Shu to compose the *Record of the Inscriptions of the Names of the Dharma-Transmitting Disciples*, with Shanpeng heading the list.
