King Zhongyi of Wuyue, Qian Hongchu, styled Wenming, was descended from a family of Lin'an in Hangzhou for generations. In the time of Emperor Xizong of the Tang, his grandfather King Wusu, Qian Liu (pronounced Liu), led local troops to defeat and rout Huang Chao, his fame resounding throughout the Jiang-Huai region. Again, using the troops of the Eight Garrisons, he attacked Liu Hanhong and annexed Yuezhou, offering it to Dong Chang while residing himself in Hangzhou. During the reign of Emperor Zhaozong, Chang rebelled using Yue. Liu sent a letter sternly rebuking him, but he did not listen; [Liu] then mobilised all his troops and executed him. From then on, he possessed all the lands of eastern and western Zhe. In the fourth year of Qianning, he was first enfeoffed as King of Wuyue. At the beginning of the Kaiping era of the Liang, he was additionally enfeoffed as Shangfu and Military Commissioner of Huaihai. [The throne] was transmitted to his son King Wenmu, Qian Yuanguan; Guan's son was King Zhongxian, Qian Renzuo. Zhongxian defeated the troops of Li Jing and took Fuzhou. After he died, his younger brother Zong succeeded to the throne; being perceptive and sternly resolute, he was resented and deposed by the senior general Hu Jinsi (his descendants privately bestowed the posthumous title King Xun). They then welcomed and enthroned Chu, who was the ninth son of Wenmu. Chu first served as the Prefect of Taizhou during the Kaiyun era of the Jin.
