Dharma Master Youji, courtesy name Jixian, was of the Wang family of Qiantang. His mother dreamed of an Indian monk giving her a relic, which she swallowed, whereupon she became pregnant. At five years of age, he took Fachao of Shouchang on Mount Tiantai as his master. At ten, he received the full precepts. Hearing that Baoyun of Siming was transmitting Zhiyi's teaching, he went to serve him. Baoyun instructed him in the Lotus [Sūtra] and *Stopping and Contemplation*; following the words, he understood their meaning, exhaustively plumbing their subtleties. In the first year of the Duangong era, people of the commandery invited him to expound the teaching at Taiping Xingguo Monastery. His students constantly numbered in the hundreds. On every new moon and full moon, he would gather the assembly, mount the high seat, and chant the Bodhisattva Precepts. For forty years, he exhorted the clan of the Way to practice Buddha-mindfulness, [reaching] up to ten thousand people. In years of famine, he held his alms bowl to provide for his listeners. In the sixth month of the eighth year of the Daxiangfu era, he manifested illness. His disciple Lingxiang asked, 'Now that the Upādhyāya is returning to the West, will you leave no final instruction?' The Master then spoke extensively on the perfect principle without ceasing for a long time. Suddenly, the assembly saw light appear from the west and music played in the sky. The Master said, 'The Three Sages of the West have arrived.' He then reclined on his right side facing west and passed away. His cremated relics were beyond count. His disciple Wuchi built a stūpa on Linggui Mountain in Cixi. Someone dreamed of the Master being welcomed to the West with dignified bearing; someone dreamed of the Master seated on a blue lotus flower expounding the Dharma before the Buddha; someone dreamed of the Threefold-Body Tathāgata entering his miraculous stūpa; and someone dreamed of Amitābha bestowing a prophecy that he would become the Tathāgata Chaozhuang. When Fazhi heard of his passing, he sighed and said, 'Lying sick he discussed the profound, and at the approach of death he saw the Buddha; this is truly worthy of reverence.' Academician Yang Yi paid homage to his true likeness and composed a praise for him. (Quansanxue composed a stele on his conduct and practice, which is at Fuyuan. In this fascicle there are 118 people; the Basic Annals only recorded 33, while the rest were lost.)
