Dharma Master Yongkan, bestowed with the name Cijue, was aloof and uniquely upright. Ordinarily, he never set foot in nunneries. Studying under Jinghui, he closely modeled himself after his way. Later he succeeded Shenzhi, residing at Tianzhu for twenty-one years. Scholars from the four seas looked up to him as the leader of the tradition. He once instructed the assembly, saying: “To understand the Way yet be unable to practice it is like seeing rice yet being unwilling to eat it; in the end one is a starving person.” On another day he also said to the assembly: “Why do you all stubbornly endure starvation?” The assembly felt ashamed at his words. Scholars of that time followed one another in advancing forward; he was said to be an outstanding hero of the world.
