14.43

述曰。靖師之德。可以脫索命之鬼。可以度空室之崇。可以感上竺之符。而不能却兀朮之寇止上竺之焚。蓋當群生同分業感兵厄火災。所不得而幸免也。

The narrator says: Master Jing's virtue was capable of liberating a ghost demanding a life, delivering the haunting spirit in an empty room, and evoking the heavenly tally for Shangzhu, yet it could not repel the banditry of Wuzhu nor prevent the burning of Shangzhu. For when sentient beings share a common retributive karma that evokes the calamity of war and the disaster of fire, it is something that cannot be fortuitously escaped.
