Dharma Master Chugong was a native of Yongjia, styled Yi'an. Having long followed Yuanbian, he attained his teaching. Later in life he presided over Nanhu and earned renown for his eloquence and skillful preaching. He abandoned fixed conventions and did not dwell on minor details. When anyone sought instruction from him, he would take up his brush and write immediately, expounding the patriarchal intention distinct from ordinary theories. Scholars from near and far esteemed him as a lineage master. On the first day of the year, he established a Golden Radiance retreat, and the Vinaya residence at Huxin also practiced this repentance. Its abbot, Zheng Zhuxi, always held the master's virtue in high regard; every evening during the first watch, he would lead his disciples across to Nanhu to hear the essentials of the Dharma. Attending the seat, Zhuxi praised him with admiration, saying, 'How fortunate are our disciples to hear the Great Vehicle! What is clarified in the Four-Part Vinaya takes examination of the body as essential; but if one speaks of clarifying the mind and seeing one's nature, does it not lie in this?' The whole assembly rejoiced at this.
