Dharma Master Tanshun was a native of Huanglong. He renounced the householder's life at a young age and received instructions from Kumārajīva. In lecturing on and explaining various scriptures, he thoroughly plumbed the profound purport of form and emptiness being without attachment. Kumārajīva sighed in admiration: “This young man is an extraordinary vessel!” Later, he came to Mount Lu to cultivate pure karma together [with the others]. Liu Zunxiao, the Commandant of Pacifying the Southern Barbarians, founded a monastery in Jiangling and invited the Master to oversee its establishment, where he extensively propagated the path of the mindfulness-of-Buddha samādhi. In the second year of the Yuanjia reign era of the Song, he bid farewell to the community and passed away while sitting upright, an extraordinary fragrance filling the room. His age was seventy-nine.
