Zhang Quan, courtesy name Xiushuo, was a clansman's son to Ye. His sentiments were lofty and untrammeled, and he was exceedingly fond of the ancient classics. Even while plowing and hoeing, he still carried scriptures without setting them down. The court summoned him to be a Gentleman Attendant at the Palace, but he did not rise to the post. Yu Yue, on account of his poverty, raised him to be the magistrate of Xunyang; Quan laughed and said, 'The ancients considered a room just enough to accommodate one's knees to be peace; if one bends one's will to take emoluments, how could that be considered an honor?' He then entered Mount Lu to rely on Master Yuan. Exhaustively investigating the Buddhist scriptures, he had deep awakenings. In the first year of Jingping of the Song, without illness, he faced west reciting the Buddha's name, lay down peacefully, and passed away at sixty-five years of age.
