Lu Xiujing was a native of Wuxing. In his youth he became a Daoist master and established a lodge on Mount Lu. At that time, Master Yuan resided at Donglin; there, a flowing spring encircled the monastery and flowed down into a creek. Whenever he saw guests off past this point, a tiger would roar and cry, so it was named Tiger Creek. Thereafter, when seeing off guests, he never crossed it. Only when Tao Yuanming and Xiujing came did their discussion of the Dao chime together so well that they crossed the creek without realizing it. Consequently, they laughed loudly together; the world has transmitted this as the Painting of the Three Laughs. In the third year of Taishi of the Song dynasty, he transformed and ascended like a feathered immortal in the capital, and was granted the posthumous title Jianji. His former residence was turned into an abbey (the original biography in the Seven Slips of the Cloudy Bookcase states that he transformed in the fifth year of Yuanhui).
