慈雲淨土略傳。阿彌陀佛化身。至長安聞滻水聲曰。可教念佛三年滿。長安城皆念佛。後有法照法師。即善導和上也。

The Ciyun jingtu lüezhuan (Brief Biographies of the Pure Land by Ciyun) states: He was an emanation of Amitābha Buddha. When he arrived in Chang'an and heard the sound of the Chan River, he said, 'People can be taught to recite the Buddha's name.' In three years, the entire city of Chang'an was reciting the Buddha's name. Later there was Dharma Master Fazhao, who was indeed the Upādhyāya Shandao.
