晞湛。山陰人。少為儒生。忍厭世出家。與瑩行人於阮社同建無量壽佛殿。專修淨業。坐不背西。久之常見三聖相。一夕面西誦經。正坐作印而化。

Xizhan was a native of Shanyin. In his youth he was a Confucian scholar. Overcome with weariness of the world, he left home. Together with the practitioner Ying, he built an Amitāyus Buddha Hall at Ruanshe and dedicated himself to Pure Land practice, never turning his back to the west while sitting. After a long time, he constantly saw the forms of the Three Holy Ones. One evening, reciting sūtras facing west, he sat upright, formed a mudrā, and passed away.
