Taiwei in his childhood sought refuge with Dharma Master Fa'an of Qiantang. When first taught the Amitābha Sūtra, he was immediately able to recite it from memory. Upon receiving full ordination, he resolved to close his doors and recollect the Buddha, becoming a non-retrogressing monk. Often strolling on the mountain behind, he suddenly heard the flute of a sculling boat and had a breakthrough awakening; he then kept a flute to amuse himself. There was an Assistant Magistrate Ling who also cultivated Pure Land practice, who called Wei the "Pure Land Village Elder." One day he knocked on the door and said: "The younger brother of the Pure Land Village Elder has come to meet you." Wei said: "Tomorrow morning we can meet in the Pure Land; today reciting the Buddha's name is urgent." The next morning, people found it strange that he did not come for porridge and went to look; they saw that his flute, bowl, and meditation chair had already been burned, and he had passed away sitting cross-legged on the ground.
