Liaoyi, styled Mune, was the great-grandson of Junior Preceptor Zhongli. At fifteen he passed the imperial examinations. Passing through Jinling, he met Master Ji of Baoning, heard the Dharma, and attained awakening. Thereupon he shaved his head and was ordained. Wherever he stayed, he inscribed the placename "Yesterday's Dream". In thought after thought, he reflected on the Western Direction without interruption. When Master Xiang went to Huangbo, he pulled him along to accompany him. One night, Xiang dreamed that the Master came to bid farewell, saying: "I am returning to the West," and again saw the Buddhas and bodhisattvas bestow upon him a golden pedestal. After three days, [the Master] lit incense, sat in meditation, smiled, and passed away. He had once visited Mount Wutai, where he suddenly became aware that he was following behind an assembly of bodhisattvas circumambulating the way. There were two men with purple ribbons and gold seals following behind him. The Master asked their names; a monk led him to the side of the hall to view a jade plaque inscribed in gold letters with the two names: Wang Gu and Ge Fan.
