Liaoxuan studied at Baolin in Siming. He entered the Guangyan Hall at Nanhu to read the Canon, and participated in the Lotus repentance retreats for twenty-seven years. He was on the closest terms with the practitioner Rong. One day he went to Rong's room and sat in silence. Rong questioned him, and the Master said: "My return to the West has its appointed time; it is difficult to forget our fellowship on the path. I hope to meet you again in the Pure Land, that is all." Rong said joyfully: "That is precisely my fortunate wish!" Suddenly he manifested illness, and invited the assembly to chant the Amitābha Sūtra. In the midst of chanting the Buddha's name, he sat upright and wrote a verse: "Nature and characteristics leave behind emotional attachments; the one and three have no ground. / Ceasing the breath, it does not move: mahā-śrī." Joining his palms, he passed away. In the summer heat, his casket was kept for seven days; his complexion remained rosy, and a fine saliva appeared at the corners of his mouth. Onlookers absorbed it with handkerchiefs, and a wondrous fragrance wafted to people. When the literati and commoners heard of it, the whole city emptied to absorb it; the fragrant saliva increased even more. At the place of his cremation (jhāpita), there were countless śarīra.
