28.56

范儼。家武林。讀法華經念彌陀佛常日不廢。忽見普賢菩薩來報當生淨土。越一夕佛菩薩來迎。家人聞其謙謝云。儼是何人實為難當。就座合掌而化。

Fan Yan lived in Wulin. He read the Lotus Sūtra and recited the name of Amitābha Buddha every day without interruption. Suddenly he saw Bodhisattva Samantabhadra come to announce that he was due to be born in the Pure Land. After one night, the Buddhas and bodhisattvas came to welcome him. His family heard him humbly decline, saying, 'Who is Yan that I should truly deserve this?' Taking his seat and joining his palms, he was transformed.
