Old Ji was an ironworker from Taoyuan in Siming. Approaching seventy years of age, he lost the sight in both eyes. The village instructor Zan printed and distributed grid-charts to urge people to recite the Buddha's name. Old Ji at first received one chart and completed 360,000 recitations; when he reached four charts, both eyes became clear. Thus for three years, he completed seventeen charts. One day, while reciting the Buddha's name, his breath suddenly stopped. After half a day he revived, saying, 'I saw the Buddhas and bodhisattvas instruct me to give six charts to Instructor Zan, as he is the leader of the exhortations; and to give one chart to Old Li the Second, as he is the distributor of the charts.' He charged his son to go and thank the Instructor. When he finished speaking, he bathed, sat facing west, and passed away.
