29.20

鎧菴曰。愚法小乘不說轉小成衍。又無別圓被接及法華開顯。則將畢世愚矣。始終圓頓四教。皆無斷伏修證分齊。至說起信論觀法。則云。修之次第如天台摩訶止觀。豈非有教而無觀耶。

Kāi'ān said: 'If the Small Vehicle foolish about phenomena does not speak of transforming the small to achieve the Great, and moreover lacks the adoptive reception of the distinct and complete teachings as well as the revelation and manifestation of the Lotus Sūtra, then they would remain foolish to the end of their lives. The four teachings—initial, final, complete, and sudden—all lack the demarcations of severing and subduing [delusion], or cultivation and realization. When it comes to explaining the contemplation methods of the Awakening of Faith, it says: "The stages of practice are like Tiantai's Mohe zhiguan." Is this not having doctrine without contemplation?'
