Dharma Master Zixuan was a man of Jiahe. He first relied on Master Hongmin to study the Śūraṅgama Sūtra; when he reached the point where the two aspects of motion and stillness clearly do not arise, he had an awakening. Hearing that Langya Huijue's virtue was esteemed in that age, he hastened to his gate. Encountering him ascending the hall, he immediately posed the question: 'Pristinely pure and fundamentally so, how do the mountains, rivers, and the great earth suddenly arise?' Jue gave a shout and said: 'Pristinely pure and fundamentally so, how do the mountains, rivers, and the great earth suddenly arise?' The Master bowed down, dripping with sweat, and experienced a great awakening. Jue said to him: 'Your school has long been in decline. You should exert your will to support it, so as to repay the Buddha's kindness.' The Master bowed and departed as instructed. Later he resided at Changshui, where his followers numbered nearly a thousand. Following the tenets of Xianshou, he composed a ten-scroll commentary on the Śūraṅgama Sūtra, which circulated in the world.
