賢師三時之教。立義疏闊。豈足以收一代之經。慈恩玄贊之作。觀心虧闕。豈足以通一實之典。恕之者則曰。此別為一機也。當天台之興。南三北七為之掃迹矣。豈容慈恩崛起於四海永清之後。是不得不議也。撰慈恩宗教志。

Master [Śīla]bhadra's teaching of the three periods established doctrines that were broad and loose; how could they suffice to encompass the scriptures of the Buddha's entire lifetime? The Xuanzan composed by Ci'en was deficient in contemplating the mind; how could it suffice to penetrate the scripture of the One Real? Those who excuse them say: 'These were intended for a particular capacity.' When Tiantai arose, the three schools of the south and seven schools of the north had their traces wiped away by it. How could Ci'en be permitted to rise up suddenly after the four seas had long been pacified? This must be critiqued. I have therefore written the Record of the Ci'en School and Doctrine.
