29.33

義神智曰。慈恩玄贊之釋法華也。都無立行攝法入心成觀等義。專用唯識論定性滅種以通此經。茲乃徒援權文用證實教。然其談八識緣境廣狹。及轉識成智束智成身。與夫造業受報等說。厥功為多。

Shenzhi of the Yixue school said: 'When Cien [Kuiji] in his Xuanzan interpreted the Lotus Sūtra, he lacked completely the meanings of establishing practice, collecting dharmas into the mind, and perfecting contemplation; he exclusively employed the Vijñaptimātra treatises' fixed nature and eradication of the seeds to interpret this scripture. This was merely citing provisional texts to prove the real teaching. Nevertheless, his discussions of the scope of the eight consciousnesses' cognitive objects, the transformation of consciousness into wisdom and the grouping of wisdoms to form the bodies, as well as his explanations of creating karma and receiving retribution, had immense merit.'
