The Second Patriarch, Huike (formerly named Shenguang), of the Ji clan in Wulao, served Bodhidharma for six years. One day he asked: "May I hear the Dharma-seal of the Buddhas?" Bodhidharma said: "The Dharma-seal of the Buddhas is not obtained from others." The Master said: "My mind is not at peace; I beg the Master to pacify my mind." Bodhidharma said: "Bring me your mind, and I will pacify it for you." The Master said: "I have searched for my mind, but it is completely unobtainable." Bodhidharma said: "I have pacified your mind for you." Previously, Bodhidharma had handed him the four fascicles of the Laṅkāvatāra, saying: "If you, benevolent one, practice in accordance with this, you will naturally be able to attain liberation." The Master told his disciples: "Four generations after this, this sūtra will turn into mere names and marks. How lamentable!" After the Master transmitted the Dharma to Sengcan, he said to him: "I have past debts that must now be repaid." He then went to the capital of Ye to carry out transformation. In the twelfth year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui, he expounded the unsurpassed Way at Zhengjiu Temple in Guancheng. A Dharma Master He had previously been lecturing on the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, and his students gradually slipped away to hear [Huike's] preaching of the Dharma. He, unable to contain his wrath, slandered him to the district magistrate, who subjected him to unlawful punishment. The Master placidly and obediently met his end at the age of one hundred and seven. His pagoda is in Fenyang County, Cizhou. During the reign of Emperor Dezong of the Tang, he was posthumously titled Chan Master Dazu.
