In the eighteenth year (dingyou), the Buddha was on the summit of Mount Laṅkā by the southern seashore and preached the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra. Bodhisattva Mahāmati asked the Bhagavat, 'Non-Buddhists even forbid and do not permit the eating of meat; how much less should the Tathāgata, in his great compassion nurturing all beings, permit oneself and others to eat meat?' The Buddha answered the bodhisattva, 'There are immeasurable causes and conditions why one should not eat meat. That is to say, all sentient beings from the beginningless past, through the revolving causes and conditions, have continuously been one's six classes of kin; because they are one's kin, one should not eat meat. Because it is grown and produced from impure vapors, one should not eat meat. Because sentient beings who smell the odor all give rise to terror, as if toward a caṇḍāla, one should not eat meat. Because it prevents spells and dhāraṇīs from succeeding, one should not eat meat.' (Note: The Huayan chao says, 'Mount Laṅkā is the dwelling place of the yakṣa Rāvaṇa. Translated here, it means "Inaccessible"; only those with supernormal powers can reach it. Avatāra is translated here as "entering/traveling into", referring to the Buddha and the great assembly crossing to the other shore of the sea, accepting the invitation of the yakṣa king, and ascending through the air to go there.' The Qian says, 'If within the Mahāyāna, the Brahmajāla Sūtra had already instituted the prohibition, this discourse was made here; one should know that the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra came after the four Āgamas, serving as the beginning of the gradual prohibition. The Buddha answered the bodhisattva that meat should not be eaten, thus we know it still retained the dispensations of the Hinayāna teachings.') He also preached the Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sūtra, the Śūraṅgamasamādhi Sūtra (Śūraṅgama is translated here as 'valiant aspect', discerning and knowing the kinds, quantities, shallowness, and depths of all samādhis, just as a great general knows the strength of various troops by observing their banners and arrays), and the Śrīmālādevī Sūtra (its full title being the Śrīmālādevī-siṃhanāda-ekayāna-upāya-mahāvaipulya Sūtra. The Qian says: 'Śrīmālā was the daughter of Queen Mallikā. Mallikā and the king, having already believed in the Buddha, sent a letter to their daughter. The daughter faced the messenger and spoke in verse: "I revere and reflect upon the Buddha, the Bhagavat, / who appears universally for the sake of all living beings; / he should also take pity on us, / and quickly come to this place." Immediately upon giving rise to this thought, the Buddha manifested in the air. She spoke further verses: "The Tathāgata's wondrous form-body / has no equal in the world; / incomparable and inconceivable, / therefore now I faithfully make obeisance..." and so on. Mallikā was a daughter born under a nai tree, and was the queen consort of King Prasenajit.').
