Forty-second year (xinyou): The Buddha went to Rājagṛha. When the meal was finished, he had Rāhula wash [the bowl]. Through a slip of the hand, it fell and broke into five pieces. The Buddha said: 'One hundred years after my nirvāṇa, the monks will divide the Vinaya Piṭaka into five sections. One hundred years after that, the venerable [Upagupta] will have five disciples, each adhering to his own view. The Dharmagupta school's text is called the Four-Part Vinaya (meaning here "Dharmagupta"). The Sarvāstivāda school's text is called the Ten-Recitation Vinaya (meaning here "All-Exists"). The Kāśyapīya school's text is called the Five-Part Vinaya (meaning here "Double Emptiness"). The Mahīśāsaka school's text is called the Five-Part Vinaya (meaning here "Contemplation Non-attached to Being and Non-being"). The text of the Vātsīputrīya school's vinaya never arrived [in China] (meaning here "Vātsīputra"). The vinayas of these five schools all take the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya as their root.'
