The establishment of the essence of the Secret [Teaching]: The Qian, commenting on the Xuan text, says: 'The mysteries of body, speech, and mind are unimpeded according to any of the four gates.' Furthermore, the Qian says: 'Because the secret does not go beyond these seven.' Yitang took the three mysteries and four gates as the intrinsic essence, and the two principles of truth and the middle as the underlying essence. Shipao took the seven teachings as the functional essence. Although each has textual basis, it must necessarily take the seven teachings as fulfilling the doctrinal meaning.
