First, the manifest determinate teaching: people see one another and hear the Dharma together; they mutually know of one another, and their attainment of benefit is determinate. The Miaoxuan states: 'As distinguished before, this merely explains the characteristics of the gradual and sudden five flavors in terms of the manifest.' The Qian states: 'Speaking broadly of the manifest, it subsumes both the gradual and the sudden.' Second, the manifest indeterminate teaching: people see one another and hear the Dharma together; they mutually know of one another, but their attainment of benefit is indeterminate. The Miaoxuan states: 'Within a single time, a single preaching, and a single thought, all indeterminacies are present; this is the manifest indeterminate.' Third, the secret determinate teaching: internally divided into two: there are those who do not see one another, do not hear the Dharma together, do not mutually know of one another, but their attainment of benefit is determinate (explained by contrasting this assembly with the ten directions); and there are those who see one another, hear the Dharma together, do not mutually know of one another, but their attainment of benefit is determinate (explained by contrasting one person with many people). Fourth, the secret indeterminate teaching: internally divided into two: there are those who do not see one another, do not hear the Dharma together, do not mutually know of one another, and their attainment of benefit is indeterminate (explained by contrasting this assembly with the ten directions); and there are those who see one another, hear the Dharma together, do not mutually know of one another, and their attainment of benefit is indeterminate (explained by contrasting one person with many people). The present two teachings of secret and indeterminate are simply secret indeterminate (the secret teaching) and manifest indeterminate (the indeterminate teaching). The Miaoxuan states: 'The present Lotus is manifest and not secret; it is gradual-and-sudden and not gradual-gradual; it is unified and not non-unified; it is clarified butter and not the [other] four flavors; it is determinate and not indeterminate.'
