Because both sutras equally clarify the opening and revealing, and both belong to clarified butter, they are combined into one period. These are both designated by the names of the sutras. The Lotus [Sutra] in full is called the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra. Because the wondrous Dharma has the three senses of applying, opening, and discarding, the lotus is used as a metaphor. As for Nirvāṇa, in full it is called the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra. Here this translates as great extinction and crossing over: great is the Dharma-body; extinction is liberation; crossing over is prajñā. From beginning to end, this single sutra purely discusses the three virtues.
