In the seventh year (bǐngxū), the brāhmaṇa Śāriputra met the bhikṣu Aśvajit on the road, who recited a verse; Śāriputra obtained the purity of the Dharma-eye. Returning, he proclaimed the verse to his close friend Maudgalyāyana, who also obtained the purity of the Dharma-eye. Thereupon, each took one hundred disciples and went to the Bamboo Grove, seeking to leave household life. The Buddha called, 'Come, bhikṣus!' Their beards and hair fell off of themselves, kāṣāyas covered their bodies, and they immediately became śramaṇas. Furthermore, he broadly expounded the Four Truths for those two hundred disciples, and they also became arhats. At that time, the Bhagavat, together with one thousand two hundred and fifty great arhats, broadly benefited sentient beings in the country of Magadha (Yinguo jing). At that time, there was a brāhmaṇa named Kāśyapa, immensely wealthy, who renounced household life, entered the mountains, and shaved his own beard and hair. Devas in the sky told him to go see the Buddha. Kāśyapa went to the Bamboo Grove, where the Buddha expounded the Dharma for him and he obtained arhatship. Because he possessed great majesty, virtue, and wisdom, he was named Mahākāśyapa (Yinguo jing). Kāśyapa encountered the Buddha at the Bahuputraka Stūpa and requested to leave household life; he offered his worn robe—worth one hundred thousand liang of gold—to the Buddha as a seat. The Buddha then bestowed on him a hempen patched robe (Āgama sūtras. 'Śāṇa' means 'grass clothing'; a 'patched robe' is the dhūta five-fold patched robe. Here, saying 'śāṇa' simply means using grass as clothing).
