Twelfth year (xinmao): The Buddha dispatched Maudgalyāyana to address his father the king and Yaśodharā, saying, 'Prince Rāhula is already nine years of age and ought to be made to renounce household life.' Yaśodharā replied, 'When the Tathāgata was Crown Prince, he married me as his wife. Before three years had elapsed, he fled to the mountains and marshes, toiling bitterly for six years before attaining Buddhahood and returning to his state. Now he wishes again to seek my child; what could be so cruel as this?' (returning to the state of Kapilavastu). At that time, Maudgalyāyana employed expedient means to enlighten her, but she had absolutely no intention of consenting. The Bhagavat then dispatched a transformed person who announced from midair, 'Do you remember when you bought five stalks of lotus flowers with five hundred silver coins to offer to Dīpaṅkara Buddha? At that time, you sought me as your husband life after life. I said, "A bodhisattva practices vows through successive kalpas, giving away everything without running contrary to people's wishes. If you can do so, I permit you to be my wife." You made a vow, saying, "Whatever you give away, my lord, I vow to have no regret." Why then do you now cherish Rāhula and not permit him to renounce household life?' Having heard this, Yaśodharā recalled her past lives as if she had seen them yesterday. Her feelings of attachment to her child naturally melted away. Grasping Rāhula's hand, she entrusted him to Maudgalyāyana. At that time, King Śuddhodana assembled the noble clans of the state, and each dispatched a son to accompany his grandson. Fifty men went to the Buddha's place. He had Ānanda shave their heads, and for the fifty princes, he commanded Śāriputra to be their upādhyāya and Maudgalyāyana to be their ācārya. Rāhula did not delight in listening to the Dharma. The Buddha preached the Adbhutadharmaparyāya for him; he received the ten precepts and immediately realized the four fruits (Adbhutadharmaparyāya Sūtra).
King Śuddhodana approached the Buddha and addressed him, saying, 'When the Buddha formerly renounced household life, there was still Nanda. Now Nanda has also renounced household life. The remaining affection I have is invested solely in this child. If he now renounces household life, the lineage of our state will be forever severed.' The Buddha immediately preached the Dharma for the king to comfort him, and again assembled the monks to establish the rule: 'Without the permission of parents, one is not permitted to renounce household life' (Mahīśāsaka-vinaya).
The Buddha went to the Impure Marsh to preach the Dharma for Dagumo (Sūtra of the Twelve Years of Wandering).
The Buddha preached the Eightfold Observance Precepts for the monks (Sūtra on the Eightfold Observance Precepts).
When the Buddha was in the city of Rājagṛha, there was a group of seventeen boys, the eldest being seventeen years old and the youngest twelve. Out of faith, they renounced household life. The monks immediately ordained them; having received the full precepts, they could not endure eating only once a day and wept at night. The Buddha became aware of this, inquired, and instituted the rule: 'Only upon reaching twenty full years of age may one receive the full precepts' (Dharmaguptaka-vinaya).
When the Buddha recited the prātimokṣa every half month, the assembly gathered with weariness. He permitted the saṅghārāmas each to establish their own great boundary (Dharmaguptaka-vinaya).
